CHAPTER 20

Rue Victor Hugo

a Saturday morning July 2007

“Come back to bed,” growled Darren. “I’ve got this massive hard-on and I don’t know what to do with it.”

“You poor thing. I won’t be long . I’ve got to make some tea. I had an awful dream and have been awake for hours. I can’t stop thinking about it.”

“Come here — I’ll take your mind off it.”

They heard the post van arriving. Jasper put the kettle on and nipped downstairs in his dressing gown. A single letter lay in the box. He felt an odd twinge, reading handwriting he had not seen for many years: his mother’s.

He took the tea and the letter into the bedroom and flung the window wide, letting in the not very fresh air. It was going to be stiflingly hot again.

“Are you alright?” asked Darren. “You look worried.”

“Yes, I mean, I am worried. This letter, it’s from my mother — you know I finally did write to her?” He opened the envelope.

Darren pushed back the sheet and revealed as he had said, an impressive extension to himself: “Sorry, it just won’t go away . ”

“OK, relief is at hand, or something.” Jasper put the letter down and his eyes scanned the first line as he did so. “Fuck!”

“Yes pleeease.”

Jasper sat down heavily: “No really, read that.” Darren read the same line and gasped: “Oh Christ . I’m so sorry — I don’t know what to say.”

“Read it to me . I can’t believe it.”

Darren sat up and read, body part forgotten.
